    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; quantum Hall effect; quasiparticles; noncommutative Chern-Simons theory; nonabelian statistics; thin torus; p-wave superconductivity; topology; index theory; effective gauge fields; Condensed matter physics; Kondenserade materiens fysik;

    Sammanfattning : The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), discovered in 1982 in a two-dimensional electron system, has generated a wealth of successful theory and new concepts in condensed matter physics, but is still not fully understood. The possibility of having nonabelian quasiparticle statistics has recently attracted attention on purely theoretical grounds but also because of its potential applications in topologically protected quantum computing. Sammanfattning : The experimental work presented in this thesis is based on a wide assortment of very advanced and highly sophisticated photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) techniques. The objective of the present study has been to reveal and understand the electronic structure and electron dynamics in a broad spectrum of materials, ranging from wide band gap oxides, via semiconductors along with metals, and finally high-temperature superconductors. Sammanfattning : First principle electronic structure theory is used to describe the effect of crystal binding on radiation detectors, electron transport properties, and structural damage induced by intense irradiation. A large database containing general electronic structure results to which data mining algorithms can be applied in the search for new functional materials, a case study is presented for scintillator detector materials. 4. 4. Interacting Dirac Matter

    Författare :Saikat Banerjee; Alexander V. Balatsky; Jens Paaske; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dirac; superconductor; magnon; interaction; Fermi liquid theory; renormalization; Physics; Fysik;

    Sammanfattning : The discovery of graphene in 2004 has led to a surge of activities focused on the theoretical and experimental studies of materials hosting linearly dispersive quasiparticles during the last decade. Rapid expansion in the list of materials having similar properties to graphene has led to the emergence of a new class of materials known as the Dirac materials. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Quasielectrons in Abelian and non-Abelian Quantum Hall States

    Författare :Maria Hermanns; Thors Hans Hansson; Steven Simon; Stockholms universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Strongly correlated electron systems continue to  attract a lot of interest. Especially two-dimensional electron systems have shown many surprising behaviours. A fascinating example is the quantum Hall effect, which arises when electrons are confined to two dimensions, subjected to a very large magnetic field, and cooled to very low temperatures. LÄS MER
