  1. 1. Novel Statistical Methods in Quantitative Genetics : Modeling Genetic Variance for Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Genomic Evaluation

    Författare :Xia Shen; Örjan Carlborg; Lars Rönnegård; William Hill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; statistical genetics; quantitative trait loci; genome-wide association study; genomic selection; genetic variance; hierarchical generalized linear model; linear mixed model; random effect; heteroscedastic effects model; variance-controlling genes; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis develops and evaluates statistical methods for different types of genetic analyses, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genomic evaluation. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide novel insights in modeling genetic variance, especially via random effects models. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Milk Genomics – Impact of Genetic Polymorphism on Bovine Milk Composition and Processability

    Författare :Maria Glantz; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; milk genomics; bovine milk; milk composition; technological properties; processability; cheese; quantitative genetic evaluation; single gene effect; genomic selection; genetic polymorphism; leptin; direct genomic value;

    Sammanfattning : Milk genomics is a new area of research that explores the relations between cow genetics and milk characteristics. Identifying the genes controlling compositional and technological traits of milk will give opportunities to select cows for targeted milk production. In this thesis, the impact of different genetic approaches, i.e. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Accessing Genetic Variation by Microarray Technology

    Författare :Katarina Lindroos; Edwin Southern; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; microarrays; SNPs; minisequencing; four-colour detection; allele frequency; population study; evolutionary biology; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Molekylär medicin; Molecular Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Microarray technology is a promising approach for the simultaneous analysis of multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which are the most abundant form of genetic variation. In this thesis enzyme-assisted microarray-based methods were developed to improve the accuracy and genotype discrimination power of the current methods for SNP genotyping. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease : focus on quantitative EEG in relation to genetic, biochemical and neuroimaging markers

    Författare :Vesna Jelic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The main aims of this thesis were to explore whether quantitative EEG (qEEG) variables could be considered as positive markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and sensitive indices of disease progression and treatment effects, as well as to determine their relation to currently existing genetic, biochemical and neuroimaging markers. The main findings of seven subsequent studies are summarized as follows: 1) Combined alpha and theta relative power and temporo-parietal alpha band coherence were the best combination of qEEG variables for the discrimination of mild to moderate AD patients and healthy controls, giving 89% overall correct classification accuracy. 5. 5. Quantitative genetics of wood quality traits in Scots pine

    Författare :Irena Fundová; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Wood quality of commercial tree species is important for many wood processingindustries and thus should be considered for inclusion in forest tree improvementprograms. This thesis evaluated the suitability of various proxy methods for rapid andnon-destructive assessment of wood quality traits on standing trees of Scots pine and thepotential for genetic improvement of different wood quality traits through recurrentselective breeding.
