  1. 11. Aspects of Plasminiogen Activator Inhibitor 1 in Metabolic Syndrome

    Författare :Karin Mossberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PAI-1; metabolic syndrome; obesity; type 2 diabetes; cardiovascular disease; fibrinolysis; thrombi; plasma; platelets; adipose tissue; mRNA; qPCR; reference gene;

    Sammanfattning : Plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) is the main inhibitor of the fibrinolytic system and binds irreversibly to tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), and thereby inhibits the protective action of t-PA against thrombus formation. Elevated levels of plasma PAI-1 is observed in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is a combination of metabolic features including obesity. LÄS MER

  2. 12. LIVING WITH PARASITES: AVIAN MALARIA, TELOMERE LENGTH AND LIFE HISTORY TRADE-OFFS

    Författare :Asghar Muhammad; MEMEG; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Avian malaria; Plasmodium; qPCR; parasitemia; life history; reproduction; survival; feather growth; MHC; telomere length; heritability; telomere loss; fitness; wild population; Acrocephalus arundinaceus; Delichon urbica;

    Sammanfattning : Haemosporidia is a well-studied group of parasites, which infect mammals, reptiles and birds and use blood sucking vectors for their transmission. By conducting natural population studies and experimental infections, We have been able to detect and quantify Haemosporidia from avian blood to investigate how these pathogens affect their avian hosts. 3. 13. Emerging tick-borne pathogens: on the ecology of multiple infections in ticks and reservoir hosts

    Författare :Martin Andersson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Borrelia afzelii; ’Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis’; bank vole; Myodes glareolus; multiple infection; tick-borne diseases; vector-borne diseases; competition; facilitation; qPCR;

    Sammanfattning : Most animals will encounter several more or less severe infectious diseases during their lifetime, and simultaneous infections with more than one pathogen, or several different strains of the same pathogen, are common in natural populations. Ticks transmit a wide variety of different pathogens and can also be simultaneously infected with more than one pathogen. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Distribution and activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in marine and estuarine waters

    Författare :Hanna Farnelid; Lasse Riemann; Jonathan Zehr; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 454-pyrosequencing; diazotrophs; heterotrophic bacteria; marine bacteria; marine microbial ecology; microbiology; nifH; nitrogenase; nitrogen fixation; PCR; qPCR; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : In aquatic environments the availability of nitrogen (N) generally limits primary production. N2-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) can convert N2 gas into ammonium and provide significant input of N into the oceans. Cyanobacteria are thought to be the main N2-fixers but diazotrophs also include a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Evolution of mate signalling in moths: Biosynthetic gene families and diversification of female sex pheromones

    Författare :Marjorie Liénard; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; duplication; transcriptome; fatty-acyl-CoA reductase; fatty-acyl-CoA desaturase; fatty-acid biosynthesis; odour; insect; Lepidoptera; phylogeny; qPCR; heterologous expression; mutagenesis;

    Sammanfattning : Pheromones are intraspecific chemical signals serving as a ubiquitous form of communication, particularly among insects. Female sex-pheromone signals act as the core constituent in the specialized odour-mediated moth mate-recognition system. Female moths typically release multicomponent mixtures of alcohols, aldehydes or acetates. LÄS MER
