11. Vascular effects of endothelin in experimental lung injury
Sammanfattning : Acute lung injury remains a frequent and life threatening consequence of severe sepsis. This thesis has investigated the role of the endothelin (ET) system in sepsis-induced lung injury, with special reference to its effects on two hallmarks of this syndrome - formation of edema and pulmonary hypertension. 12. Tissue remodelling in pulmonary fibrosis linked to 5-HT2 receptor activation
Sammanfattning : After an injury, an immediate reparative response is triggered to replace the damaged tissue, however, in fibrosis, cells remain active despite wound resolution causing a steady build-up of fibrotic tissue. In pulmonary fibrosis, there is a constant regeneration and remodelling of lung tissue where the thin architecture of alveoli become thickened, hampering efficient diffusion of oxygen, as seen in diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). 13. Acute pancreatitis, from local defense to remote organ injury
Sammanfattning : Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas. Acute abdominal pain is the most common symptom. Pancreatic injury is mild in 80% of patients, who recover without complications. The remaining patients have a severe disease with local and systemic complications such as acute lung injury (ALI). 14. Regional Lung Mechanics and Influence of an Active Diaphragm in Experimental Lung Injury
Sammanfattning : Despite being an essential life-support strategy in severe respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation can, if not optimally set and monitored, lead to injury of the lung parenchyma and diaphragm. These conditions are called ventilator-induced lung injury and ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD), respectively. LÄS MER
15. Nebulized corticosteroid in septic lung injury : An experimental study in pigs
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is occasionally complicated by the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Auto injury by immunocompetent cells are given a central role in the pathogenesis, but our understanding of the mechanisms remains fragmentary. Treatment in septic ARDS is mainly supportive, no causal therapy exists. Mortality is high at 50-70%. LÄS MER
