1. The evolution of sex chromosomes and sex-linked sequences in birds
Sammanfattning : Identifying the processes involved in the evolution of suppressed recombination between sex chromosomes and understanding their consequences for the evolutionary dynamics of sex-linked loci have been major topics of research during the last century. In this thesis, I used the avian ZW system, where females are the heterogametic sex, to investigate the underlying processes in sex chromosome evolution in birds. LÄS MER
2. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system
Sammanfattning : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. LÄS MER
3. Population level genome-wide association studies in dairy cattle
Sammanfattning : In recent years, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) has become a dominant tool for detecting genetic architectures for complex traits. Thousands of associated genetic variants have been reported. However, the resolution of these studies was limited by the available marker density for the quantitative trait loci (QTL) region. LÄS MER
4. Exploring genetic diversity in natural and domestic populations through next generation sequencing
Sammanfattning : Studying genetic diversity in natural and domestic populations is of major importance in evolutionary biology. The recent advent of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies has dramatically changed the scope of these studies, enabling researchers to study genetic diversity in a whole-genome context. 5. IKAROS and LEUKEMIA
Sammanfattning : Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is characterized by an accumulation of immature lymphoid cells in the bone marrow and is the most common cancer type in children. It is an immunophenotypically, morphologically, clinically, and genetically heterogeneous disorder that comprises several distinct subtypes. LÄS MER
