16. Understanding structural features of biomolecular interactions : from classical simulations to ab initio calculations
Sammanfattning : The structures of biomolecules and their interactions dictate their functions. In this thesis, five papers are presented to illustrate how the dynamics of biomolecules can be investigated and derivation of desired thermodynamic quantities obtained by utilising a diverse range of computational techniques, from simulations utilising classical mechanical descriptions to calculations employing quantum mechanical descriptions. 17. Structural Insights at Sub-Ångstrom, Medium and Low Resolution: Crystallization of Trypsin, Bacterioferritin, Photosynthetic Reaction Center, and Photosynthetic Core Complex
Sammanfattning : The catalytic action of serine proteases depends on the interplay of a nucleophile, a general base and a general acid. The catalytic triad is composed of serine, histidine and aspartate residues. The serine acts as a nucleophile while the histidine plays a dual role as the general base or acid at different steps of the reaction. LÄS MER
18. Insight into Catalytic Intermediates Relevant for Water Splitting
Sammanfattning : Catalysis is an important part of chemistry. This is also reflected in the chemical industry where 85-90 % of all products are made catalytically. Also nature employs catalysts, i.e. LÄS MER
19. The Oxygen Evolving cycle in Photosystem II studied with EPR Spectroscopy at different pH and Temperature
Sammanfattning : PSII catalyses the light-induced water splitting process which leads to electron transfer through the thylakoid membrane and formation of energy rich molecules. Several redox components including a Mn4Ca, an amino acid residueYZ, two special Chl molecules P680, two Pheo and two quinone molecules participate in this process. LÄS MER
20. Vitamin B6 as a potential antioxidant : a study emanating from UV-B-stressed plants
Sammanfattning : Increased influx of solar UV-B radiation (280-320 nm), due to a decreasing stratospheric ozone layer, impacts severely on plants. Some of the UV-B effects on plants are related to stress induced by produced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) has been reported to be a potential quencher of ROS. LÄS MER
