  1. 1. Hydrogen in nominally anhydrous silicate minerals : Quantification methods, incorporation mechanisms and geological applications

    Författare :Franz A. Weis; Henrik Skogby; Peter Lazor; Jannick Ingrin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NAMs; clinopyroxene; hydrogen; hydrothermal pressure; magmatic water content; zoisite; OH-dipole; Raman spectroscopy; FTIR; luminescence; proton-proton scattering;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to increase our knowledge and understanding of trace water concentrations in nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs). Special focus is put on the de- and rehydration mechanisms of clinopyroxene crystals in volcanic systems, how these minerals can be used to investigate the volatile content of mantle rocks and melts on both Earth and other planetary bodies (e. 2. 2. Dijet angular distributions in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV and root s = 14 TeV

    Författare :Nele Boelaert; Partikel- och kärnfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; black holes; ATLAS; large extra dimensions; perturbative QCD; dijets; gravitational scattering; LHC; Jets; Fysicumarkivet A:2010:Boelaert;

    Sammanfattning : Dijet angular distributions provide an excellent tool for looking at high transverse momentum parton interactions in order to study both QCD and new physics processes. With the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) recently brought into use, an unprecedented energy regime has opened up. ATLAS is one of the experiments at the LHC. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Phenomenology of Diffractive Higgs Production and Large Extra Dimensions

    Författare :Malin Sjödahl; Teoretisk partikelfysik - Geonomgår omorganisation; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ADD; black holes; gravitational scattering; quantum field theory; Elementary particle physics; LHC; cosmic rays; Kosmisk strålning; högenergi; High energy interactions; kvantfältteori; Elementarpartikelfysik; Higgs; large extra dimensions; Diffractive;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on phenomenological predictions for high energy particle collisions from two different theoretical models. The first two papers deal with uncertainties in exclusive reactions of type proton + proton -> proton + proton + Higgs. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Charged particle distributions and robustness of the neural network pixel clustering in ATLAS

    Författare :Edvin Sidebo; Jonas Strandberg; Bengt Lund-Jensen; David Silvermyr; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; p p: scattering; ATLAS; LHC; charged particle: multiplicity; semiconductor detector: pixel; neural network: performance; track data analysis: cluster; charged particle: cluster; splitting; CERN LHC Coll; Fysik; Physics;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis contains a study of the robustness of the artificial neural network used in the ATLAS track reconstruction algorithm as a tool to recover tracks in dense environments. Different variations, motivated by potential discrepancies between data and simulation, are performed to the neural network’s input while monitoring the corresponding change in the output. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Efficient sampling of Bayesian posteriors and predictive distributions in χEFT

    Författare :Isak Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chiral effective field theory; Bayesian parameter estimation; nuclear physics; Markov chain Monte Carlo; two-nucleon scattering;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I employ Bayesian statistics to quantify parametric and epistemic uncertainties in chiral effective field theories (χEFT) and propagate these forward to predictions of observables in low-energy nuclear physics. Two primary sources of uncertainty---experimental errors and the theoretical error induced by the truncation of the EFT at up to next-to-next-to-leading-order---are modelled and accounted for in the posterior distributions of the unknown low-energy constants (LECs) that govern interaction strengths in χEFT.
