21. Prokaryotic respiratory supercomplexes : Studies of interactions between complexes III and IV
Sammanfattning : Respiratory processes for cellular energy conversion are carried out by the membrane-associated enzymes of the electron transfer chain (ETC). In recent years there has been emerging data showing that the members of the ETC organize into higher-level assemblies called supercomplexes (SCs) whose functional relevance is not yet fully understood. 22. Fingerprints of light-induced molecular transients : from quantum chemical models of ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Absorption of sunlight generates renewable electricity and powers the growth of plants, but also causes severe damage both to synthetic materials and biological tissue. The wildly varying outcomes of these light-induced processes are ultimately determined by much slighter differences in their underlying reaction pathways, induced by the transient properties of short-lived and miniscule molecules; a powerful approach to their detection and characterization is offered by ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy, with identification of spectral fingerprints and further guidance from quantum chemical models. 23. Degranulation in macrophages and other leukocytes: regulation by calcium, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and protein kinase C
Sammanfattning : Macrophages mediate innate immunity through release of cytokines, eicosanoids, reactive oxygen species as well as through phagocytosis and secretion of lysosomal enzymes. Regulation of lysosomal secretion in macrophages differs in several respects from release of specialized granules in other leukocytes. LÄS MER
24. Electrochemical properties of alternative polymer electrolytes in fuel cells
Sammanfattning : Fuel cells, using hydrogen as energy carrier, allow chemically‑stored energy to be utilized for many applications, including balancing the electrical grid and the propulsion of vehicles. To make the fuel cell technology more accessible and promote a sustainable energy society, this thesis focuses on alternative polymer electrolytes, as they can potentially lead to a lower cost and a more environmentally‑friendly fuel cell. 25. Photosynthetic water oxidation : the function of two extrinsic proteins
Sammanfattning : The solar energy accumulated by photosynthesis over billions of years is the sole source of energy available on Earth. Photosystem II (PSII) uses the sunlight to split water, an energetically unfavorable reaction where electrons and protons are extracted from water and oxygen is released as a by-product. LÄS MER
