1. Interaction Between Microgels and Oppositely Charged Proteins
Sammanfattning : This thesis reports on interactions between microgels and oppositely charged proteins. Two types of negatively charged microgels are investigated: poly(acrylic acid) microgels of 60-80 µm in diameter, and colloidal poly(NIPAM-co-acrylic acid) microgels of around 1 µm in diameter. 2. Eosinophil Cationic Protein : Expression Levels and Polymorphisms
Sammanfattning : The eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) is usually associated with the eosinophil granulocyte. In this thesis the presence and production of this protein has been studied in two other cells. The circulating monocyte was found to contain ECP mRNA and small amounts of ECP, one thousand times less than that found in the eosinophil. LÄS MER
3. Tailoring of Biomaterials using Ionic Interactions : Synthesis, Characterization and Application
Sammanfattning : The interactions between polymers and components of biological systems are an important area of interest within the fields of tissue engineering, polymer chemistry, medicine and biomaterials. In order to create such a biomimetic material, it must show the inherent ability to reproduce or elicit a biological function. LÄS MER
4. Enhancing membrane and secretory protein production yields in Escherichia coli
Sammanfattning : Proteins fulfill essential functions in living cells. To produce sufficient amounts of a protein is essential to study the structure and function of a protein, or to use it for medical purposes. Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacterium that is widely used for recombinant protein production. LÄS MER
5. Myosin 1c taking adrenergic metabolism for a spin : More than a motor protein
Sammanfattning : Metabolic diseases like type II diabetes (T2D) and obesity largely stems from an unbalanced energy homeostasis with the fails of the insulin pathway to the point in which the glucose homeostasis is severely disturbed leading to hyperglycemia. We have investigated if the β-adrenergic signaling pathways, in both brown adipose tissue (BAT) and skeletal muscle, could be used as a strategy to alleviate metabolic disease. LÄS MER
