1. An evolutionary basis for protein design and structure prediction
Sammanfattning : The sequence diversity of protein families is a result of the biophysical selection pressures that shaped their evolutionary history. Among the dominant pressures is selection for protein thermostability, which in itself is an attractive target in protein engineering because of its importance for various biopharmaceutical properties, the performance of industrial enzymes, and the ability to design new protein functions. 2. Structural Information and Hidden Markov Models for Biological Sequence Analysis
Sammanfattning : Bioinformatics is a fast-developing field, which makes use of computational methods to analyse and structure biological data. An important branch of bioinformatics is structure and function prediction of proteins, which is often based on finding relationships to already characterized proteins. LÄS MER
3. Characterization of protein families, sequence patterns, and functional annotations in large data sets
Sammanfattning : Bioinformatics involves storing, analyzing and making predictions on massive amounts of protein and nucleotide sequence data. The thesis consists of six papers and is focused on proteins. LÄS MER
4. Prediction of function shift in protein families
Sammanfattning : With the availability of a large number of complete genome sequences, it has become essential to annotate the protein sequences derived from them as precisely as possible. Even though presently available computational methods can predict broad functionality for most protein sequences, there is room for improvement in order to get more precise functional annotation. 5. Studies of the Ribosomal Protein S19 in Erythropoiesis
Sammanfattning : Ribosomal proteins are components of the ribosome, the protein synthesis machinery. The ribosomal protein S19 gene (RPS19) is mutated in Diamond-Blackfan anemia, DBA, which is a rare congenital anemia with absence or reduction of erythroid precursors in bone marrow. In this thesis, the role of RPS19 in erythropoiesis is investigated. LÄS MER
