1. On cellular sources for intimal hyperplasia after vascular interventions
Sammanfattning : Vascular interventions for the treatment of symptomatic atherosclerosis fail in up to 40 % of the cases during the first year. One important reason is the development of a narrowing process known as intimal hyperplasia (IH). The cells forming IH resemble smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the media of the arterial wall. LÄS MER
2. Bisphosphonates for orthopedic applications. Studies in rat models
Sammanfattning : Prosthetic loosening, bone graft resorption and osteonecrosis are examples of problems in orthopedic surgery caused by or augmented by bone resorption. Bone resorption is caused by osteoclasts. Osteoclasts can be inactivated with biphosphonates, a drug in clinical use against osteoporosis and osteolytic tumors. LÄS MER
3. On healing of titanium implants in iliac crest bone grafts
Sammanfattning : Bone grafts and titanium implants are commonly used for surgical/prosthetic rehabilitation of the atrophic edentulous maxilla. The factors which influence bone graft healing and implant integration are not sufficiently understood. LÄS MER
4. Aspects of maxillary sinus reconstruction with endosseous implants
Sammanfattning : This study of maxillary sinus reconstruction in conjunction with insertion of endosseous implants included 99 patients. Two separate surgical methods were applied; a one-staged strategy (n=49) and a two-staged strategy (n=50). The aims were to compare two different strategies concerning implant and prosthetic construction survival. LÄS MER
5. Studies on the interaction of human cells with transplantable materials for skin repair and cardiovascular surgery
Sammanfattning : Tissue engineering is becoming an important field for the development of new tissues in vitro for replacement of diseased or worn out parts of the body. This thesis describes some characteristics of cultured human cells seeded on transplantable materials for skin repair and cardiovascular surgery. LÄS MER
