11. Apoptosis, proliferation, and sex steroid receptors in endometrium and endometrial carcinoma
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the involvement of apoptosis and proliferation in the mechanisms of menstruation and hormonal replacement therapy, HRT, as well as in the mechanisms of progesterone therapy in endometrial carcinoma. The aim of the first study was to investigate endometrium for 4 days before and for 2 days during menstruation. LÄS MER
12. Regulation of Injury Induced Schwann Cell Proliferation Schwann Cell Proliferation
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this study was to investigate injury induced proliferation of Schwann cells with emphasis of the effects of the insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) and the sex hormones progesterone and estrogen. Proliferation, measured as [3H] thymidine incorporation, was studied in cultured segments of the rat sciatic nerve or through the use of the thymidine analogue bromo- deoxy-uridine (BrdU) in combination with immunocytochemistry. 13. Ovarian hormones and effects in the brain : studies of neurosteroid sensitivity, serotonin transporter and serotonin2A receptor binding in reproductive and postmenopausal women
Sammanfattning : Background: Estrogen has been reported to enhance well-being and quality of life during the climacteric phase. In women with an intact uterus estrogen treatment is always combined with progestins in order to protect the endometrium from hyperplasia and malignancies. LÄS MER
14. Stroke, Sex and Vascular Receptor Changes in the Brain
Sammanfattning : Stroke is a severe cerebrovascular disease in which the neuronal tissue and vasculature of the brain undergo ischemia-evoked alterations. We have demonstrated an increased expression of cerebrovascular contractile receptors in the brain. This is hypothesized to mitigate cerebral blood flow and exacerbate tissue damage after stroke. 15. Intraovarian mechanisms influencing the human corpus luteum
Sammanfattning : Introduction: The human corpus luteum (CL) is a transient endocrine gland, only functionally active for about 14 days. Its principal function is to produce and secrete progesterone and thereby support the endometrium for implantation of a blastocyst and prevent rejection of the developing embryo. LÄS MER
