    Sammanfattning : The present study aims to develop a method for the analysis of argumentative patterns in spontaneous dialogue (Chapters 1-3), and to apply this method to samples of face-to-face interaction (Chapters 4-7). The purpose of the applied study is twofold: to evaluate the proposed method and to provide a contrastive description of the communicative style of Swedish and Spanish speakers in intra- and intercultural same-gender and mixed-gender dialogues.     Sammanfattning : This dissertation is on argumentative strategies based on authority. In its first half, three of the most elaborate and influential approaches in argumentation theory, related to the models developed in this work, are analyzed: Douglas Walton's dialectical frame for analysis of arguments from expert opinion; Frans van Eemeren and Peter Houtlosser's pragma-dialectical approach to strategic maneuvering in argumentation; the concept of strategy used in Else Barth and Erik Krabbe's formal dialectics. Common agricultural practices rely on the application of large quantities of industrially-produced nitrogen fertilizer, which poses a worldwide environmental threat.
