21. Aspects of infant food factors on intestinal inflammation and effects of probiotics in celiac disease autoimmunity
Sammanfattning : Aims: The overall aim of this thesis was to study dietary components with focus on exposure and ability to affect gutpermeability, peripheral immune response and gut microbiota in children at genetic risk of developing CD. Thespecific aims were to study presence of food components that might induce intestinal inflammation, evaluatepossible effects on intestinal permeability by food emulsifiers, investigate if two different strains of Lactobacillaceaeaffect ongoing CD autoimmunity and gut microbiota composition. 22. Gut microbiota, its modifications and the gut-brain axis
Sammanfattning : The human intestinal microbiota has a major impact on host physiology and might play an important role in several diseases. Therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying the gut microbiota might exert their effects locally as well as systemically, for example via the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system. 23. Effect of Probiotics on Caries-related Variables
Sammanfattning : In relation to the caries disease, the aims of this thesis were to investigate the effect of probiotic drops on different caries-related variables in vivo (Papers I & III), on interference capability and genetic response to different metabolites in vitro (II) and systematically to review the best mode and dose of administration based on the examined oral outcomes (IV). The effects on colonisation and cariogenic bacteria were studied in plaque and saliva via plating and qPCR-analyses in teenagers and orthodontic patients after short-term exposure. LÄS MER
24. Modulation of cellular innate immune responses by lactobacilli
Sammanfattning : Lactobacillus is a genus of lactic acid bacteria frequently used as healthpromoting probiotics. Using probiotics to treat or prevent infections is a novel experimental approach with vast impact on future therapy. LÄS MER
25. Urogenital probiotics : potential role of Lactobacillus in the prevention of urogenital infections in women
Sammanfattning : The human vaginal ecosystem is dominated by Lactobacillus species. An altered vaginal flora can result in symptomatic conditions such as bacterial vaginosis and vulvo-vaginal candidiasis, and urogenital colonisation by uropathogenic bacteria can cause urinary tract infection.
