The primary aim of this thesis has been to analyse the transformation of the Swedish capital market from a household perspective. The investigation shows that the transition from a mostly private credit market to a more institutionalised credit market took place at the end of the nineteenth century. LÄS MER

The major question in this thesis is where private persons borrowed on a local credit market in 1860-1910. This study has focused on informal lenders (in other research often referred to as private bankers), from whom most of private persons borrowed during the 19th century, and the savings bank in Sala. The aim of this thesis is to visualize and explain how people’s economic and social relations were connected in the parish of Sundborn, in the south east of Dalarna, in the period 1820-1849. The study is based on records of claims and debts in inventories and parish registers, which enable reconstruction of the private local credit market. LÄS MER

Theories on human behaviour and transaction costs contribute to our present understanding of why new institutions, such as banks, were established. Private promissory notes had long been circulated as local instruments of credit, and to a much greater degree than the new banknotes. LÄS MER
