11. Recognition by leukocyte formyl peptide receptors. Promiscuous binding or pattern recognition?
Sammanfattning : Neutrophil granulocytes play an important role in the early stages of microbial infection. The neutrophils have to leave the blood stream and migrate out into the tissue where they phagocytose microbes and cell debris from damaged host tissues. LÄS MER
12. Activation of neutrophils by mycobacteria and mycobacterial components
Sammanfattning : The genus Mycobacterium includes free-living saprophytes, opportunists, and human pathogens.Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the organism causing tuberculosis, as well as other pathogenicmycobacteria can survive and multiply inside phagocytic cells, but the underlying mechanisms areonly partly understood. 13. Semantic Framing of Speech : Emotional and Topical Cues in Perception of Poorly Specified Speech
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis was to test the effects of paralinguistic (emotional) and prior contextual (topical) cues on perception of poorly specified visual, auditory, and audiovisual speech. The specific purposes were to (1) examine if facially displayed emotions can facilitate speechreading performance; (2) to study the mechanism for such facilitation; (3) to map information-processing factors that are involved in processing of poorly specified speech; and (4) to present a comprehensive conceptual framework for speech perception, with specification of the signal being considered. 14. Effects of methyl jasmonate on chemical defenses of conifer seedlings in relation to feeding by Hylobius abietis
Sammanfattning : The chemical elicitor methyl jasmonate (MeJA) could replace insecticides in Europe and Asia for protection of young conifers against the pine weevil (Hylobius abietis). This thesis mainly focuses on the effects of MeJA treatment on chemical defenses of conifers from seedling batches with documented field resistance. LÄS MER
15. Subliminal or not? : An appraisal of semantic processing in the near absence of visual awareness
Sammanfattning : Stimuli that cannot be perceived (i.e., that are subliminal) can still elicit neural responses in an observer, but can such stimuli influence behavior and higher-order cognition? Empirical evidence for such effects has periodically been accepted and rejected over the last six decades. LÄS MER
