    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this study of pairs of lake and river names in the northern Swedish province of Medelpad is to establish whether, as a rule, the lake name or the river name is (in formal terms) the primary name. The study also seeks to ascertain whether there are geographical variations in ‘name priority’ in this sense within the region studied, and whether there are any signs of the priority pattern having changed over time.     Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with place-names in the southern part of the municipality of Skellefteå in the province of Västerbotten, more precisely the parishes of Bureå, Burträsk and Lövånger. It consists of three different sections, first a survey of the settlement names in each parish, then a section on the second elements in these place-names, and finally a study of names of more recent settlements.     Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the naming-practice - particularly that of first-names - among men and women in the earliest tax registers of the 1540's from the northernmost Swedish provinces of Västerbotten and Österbotten. The aim of the thesis is first and foremost to describe, and to some extent explain, the naming-practice of the permanent population, with particular reference to the similarities and differences between the two provinces as far as personal names are concerned, and to their frequency and distribution.
