  1. 1. Platinum Group Elements in Birds of Prey

    Författare :Kristine H. Ek; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; rhodium; bird of prey; platinum; laser ablation; palladium; ICP-MS; airborne particles;

    Sammanfattning : The environmental concentrations of Pd, Pt and Rh (three of the platinum group elements, PGE) have increased since the introduction of exhaust catalysts on automobiles. A limited understanding of the environmental distribution and effects of the platinum group elements has raised concern over their potential biological availability. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Attacking predators and fleeing prey : detection, escape and targeting behaviour in birds

    Författare :Ulrika Kaby; Innes Cuthill; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :zoology; ethology; birds; animal behaviour;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to further our understanding of predator and prey behaviour and decision making in different attack situations. The thesis deals with escape strategies, predator detection ability and prey targeting behaviour. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Animals and Humans : Human-animal interaction in northern Sweden during the late glacial and postglacial time

    Författare :Therese Ekholm; Sabine Sten; Carl-Gösta Ojala; Ola Magnell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Mesolithic; fauna; radiocarbon dating; northern Sweden; calcined bones; pioneers; hunter-gatherers; zooarchaeology; lithic technology; taphonomy; 8.2 k BP cold event; prey.; Archaeology; Arkeologi;

    Sammanfattning : When the last remnant of the Weichsel glacier melted in northern Sweden, around 7000 BC, pioneer settlers entered virgin land, following their prey, which in turn followed the vegetation dispersion. Some of the settlers derived from the east and the northeast and spread from the Russian taiga, through Finland and into northern Sweden, the study area for this thesis. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Författare :Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Sammanfattning : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 5. 5. Multiple stressors in rotifer communities: : Effects of predation, climate change, and brownification

    Författare :Huan Zhang; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate change; community dynamic; brownification; heat wave; inducible defense; rotifer; plasticity; multiple stressors; Predation; prey;

    Sammanfattning : Most organisms on Earth live in an environment where they are exposed to multiple pressures, including predation and climate change. In many aquatic ecosystems, organisms have to handle additional challenges such as brownification, co-occurring with climate warming. LÄS MER
