    Sammanfattning : Situated within research on language socialization and family language policy, this thesis explores how young children (2–4 years old) learn their heritage language in multilingual, transnational families, and how multilingualism becomes an integral part of family life. It draws on video-ethnographic fieldwork in three bi/multilingual families in Sweden with preschool-aged children where the mothers speak Russian and the parents aspire to raise children multilingually.     Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the vocabulary skills and the non-word repetition (NWR) performance of 99 typically developing (TD) 4­­–7-year-old Arabic-Swedish-speaking children and 11 Arabic-Swedish-speaking children with a diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The children’s early language development, family backgrounds and language exposure patterns are explored through parental questionnaires, and for the DLD children also via interviews with parents, teachers and speech-language pathologists regarding their developmental history, language skills and communicative behaviour.     Sammanfattning : The main goals of this dissertation are to investigate the associations between language and executive functions, including selective auditory attention, in Swedish children aged 4–6, to examine possible links to factors relating to the child and his/her social environment, and to evaluate preschool interventions with regard to potential improvements in language and/or executive functions. Measures were obtained by combining results from behavioral tests, language samples in the form of narratives, parent and teacher ratings and a measure of selective auditory attention as brain activity.
