  1. 1. Rectal cancer : Aspects of surgery and radiotherapy

    Författare :Michael Dahlberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Rectal cancer; surgery; preoperative radiotherapy; local recurrence; survival; adverse effects; cost-effectiveness; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : In rectal cancer, local failure is one of the principle causes of morbidity and mortality. The use of radiotherapy as an adjuvant treatment in resectable rectal cancer is extensively studied in order to lower unacceptably high local failure rates. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Remodelling of extracellular matrix in rectal cancer and preoperative radiotherapy

    Författare :Eva Angenete; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :radiotherapy; rectal cancer; extracellular matrix; MMP-2; PAI-1; uPA; Calprotectin; TGF-beta1;

    Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND Preoperative radiotherapy reduces local recurrence due to rectal cancer, but increases postoperative morbidity. The aim of this thesis was to study the impact of radiotherapy on extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling enzymes and growth factors after radiotherapy and also their possible use as surrogate markers for complications. 3. 3. Preoperative staging and radiotherapy in rectal cancer surgery

    Författare :Johan Pollack; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Rectal cancer; radiotherapy; adverse effects; endorectal ultrasound; anorectal manometry; endoanal ultrasound; quality of life; anal incontinence; preoperative staging;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Rectal cancer affects approximately 2 000 people in Sweden every year. The overall survival rate is approximately 50% after five years. During the last decades the survival has increased and the local recurrence rate has declined. This can be attributed to improved surgical techniques and introduction of preoperative radiotherapy. 4. 4. Biological and histological factors as predictors in rectal cancer patients : A study in a clinical trial of preoperative radiotherapy

    Författare :Annica Holmqvist; Xiao-Feng Sun; Gunnar Adell; Jan-Erik Frödin; Östergötlands Läns Landsting; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Sammanfattning : With improved surgical techniques and preoperative radiotherapy (RT) the local recurrence rate in rectal cancer patients has been reduced, however the mortality rate is still high and there is a huge variation in the response to preoperative RT in patients with the same tumour stage. To improve patient’s survival, it is of great importance to identify good prognostic and predictive factors that help us to select the best suited patients for preoperative RT in the future. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Preoperative radiotherapy in rectal cancer : aspects of different regimens

    Författare :David Pettersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In Sweden approximately 2000 patients are annually diagnosed with a rectal cancer. The main treatment of the cancer is surgery. Radiotherapy (RT) is used as an adjuvant treatment in >60% of these patients to improve local control and in some patients to downsize a primary non resectable tumour to facilitate surgery. LÄS MER
