  1. 1. Sex steroid secretion during childhood in males - with focus on prematurity, birth size, and growth patterns

    Författare :Kjersti Kvernebo-Sunnergren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; androgens; birth weight; body height; body weight; child; estrogens; male; mass spectrometry; premature birth; Silver-Russell syndrome;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to evaluate sex steroid secretion patterns during childhood in boys and to study how sex steroid concentrations relate to gestational age, birth weight, growth patterns, and adult height outcome. Patients and Methods: In paper I, 11 growth hormone-treated boys with Silver–Russell syndrome (SRS) who had reached adult height were included. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth

    Författare :Lars Björklund; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiration; Artificial; Pediatrics; Pediatri; Respiratory Function Tests; Pulmonary Surfactants; Newborn; Respiratory Distress Syndrome; Infant; Premature; Animals;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout. 3. 3. Troubled childhoods cast long shadows : Studies of childhood adversity and premature mortality in a Swedish post-war birth cohort

    Författare :Josephine Jackisch; Ylva B. Almquist; Alyson van Raalte; Olle Lundberg; Naja Hulvej Rod; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Mortality; Health Equity; Adverse Childhood Experiences; Child Welfare; Adult Survivors of Child Adverse Events; Life Course Perspective; Birth cohort; Longitudinal Studies; Public Health Sciences; folkhälsovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Taking a life course approach can help us to understand health inequalities. This thesis illustrates that socially-patterned childhood experiences might play a critical role for inequalities in mortality. The association between childhood adversity and premature mortality is investigated in the context of a 1953 Stockholm birth cohort. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Parents’ needs and perceptions on emotional support in neonatal care and patterns of stress in parents of preterm infants during the first year after birth

    Författare :Annika Schmöker; Tryggve Nevéus; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Emotional support; neonatal intensive care; parental group; premature birth; support interventions;

    Sammanfattning : Many parents experience preterm birth as traumatic and develop high levels of emotional stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. This can have a negative impact on the bonding process and the development of their parental identity. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Influence of inflammation and of stage of lung development on the development of neonatal lung injury

    Författare :Erica Bäckström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :premature birth; BPD; inflammation; IL-1β; lung development; gastric aspirates;

    Sammanfattning : Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a major cause of mortality and long-term morbidity in prematurely born infants. Pulmonary inflammation, and abnormal alveolar and vascular development of the lung are histological characteristics of BPD. Interleukin (IL)-1β is a central cytokine in inflammation. LÄS MER
