  1. 1. Salmonid behaviour under winter conditions

    Författare :Johan Watz; Larry Greenberg; Eva Bergman; John Piccolo; Richard Cunjak; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; drift; energy budget; foraging; grayling; ice cover; lotic; metabolic rate; predation; salmon; stream; stress; temperature; trout; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Winter conditions are believed to play an important role in the population dynamics of northern temperate stream fish, challenging the ability of fish to physiologically and behaviourally adapt. Climate change is predicted to increase both mean temperature and temperature fluctuations, especially during winter, leading to dynamic environmental conditions in terms of river ice production and flow. 2. 2. Fish coping with stress-Physiology and behaviour in salmonids with focus on stress coping styles, rearing conditions and smolt migration

    Författare :Malin Rosengren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Behaviour; Conservation; Cortisol; Intestinal barrier function; Metabolism; Salmonids; Stress; Stress coping styles;

    Sammanfattning : When animals are reared for conservational releases it is paramount to avoid reducing genetic and phenotypic variation over time. Therefore, an understanding of how behavioural and physiological traits affect the performance of an individual both within the captive and the wild environment is required. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Assembly of Gut Microbial Communities in Freshwater Fish and Their Roles in Fish Condition

    Författare :Yinghua Zha; Richard Svanbäck; Eva Lindström; Peter Eklöv; Brendan Bohannan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; freshwater fish; gut microbial communities; predation stress; diet; fish condition; bacterial colonization; metacommunity theory; dispersal; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Sammanfattning : Animal hosts provide associated microorganisms with suitable ecological niches in their intestines. Microbes help their hosts to digest food, protect against pathogens, and influence the host’s metabolisms. Compositional variation of gut microbial communities is common among hosts, and may affect the health status of hosts. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Zooplankton responses to multiple threats within and across generations

    Författare :Yongcui Sha; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Predation; Ultraviolet radiation; Daphnia; copepods; plasticity; maternal effects; adaptation; diel vertical migration;

    Sammanfattning : In their natural environments, organisms are unlikely to be distributed randomly but instead they are constantly faced with multiple and variable threats. In order to maximise survival, they need to be able to perceive the present threat level and respond accordingly. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Early life stages of brown trout - Anti-predator responses under warming winters

    Författare :Karl Filipsson; Eva Bergman; Ann Erlandsson; Johan Watz; Martin Österling; Neil Metcalfe; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; behaviour; climate; cortisol; development; egg incubation; embryo; gene expression; ice; light; mRNA; piscivorous; poikilotherm; salmonid; stress; temperature; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : During winter, juvenile salmonids in boreal streams are vulnerable to predation, mainly from mammals and birds. Encounters with terrestrial predators can be reduced or avoided if fish limit activity to the darker periods of the day or to periods with surface ice. LÄS MER
