    Sammanfattning : In the early days only the ground that was best from a geotechnical point of view was used for foundations, but now, owing to the growth of cities and to the rising prices of land, softer and more compressible soils, less suitable for foundations, are also often used.The choice of foundation method is both economically and techni­cally an important matter, and thorough testing of the soil is often needed to determine its geotechnical properties, and thus, to furnish necessary information.     Sammanfattning : To counteract natural hazards such as landslides, current methods for evaluation of soil properties as a mean for determining the safety level of natural slopes need to be refined. The empirical relationships used for estimation of the undrained shear strength from piezocone and field vane test are based on the stress conditions valid for horizontal ground and normally consolidated or slightly overconsolidated soil.     Sammanfattning : Temperature affects the soil response, but is not fully understood and quantified and thus often ignored. The temperature fluctuations resulting from energy foundations and construction activities, such as excavations and soil stabilization, however, may lead to changes in the hydromechanical response of the clay.
