1. Hierarchical responses to organic contaminants in aquatic ecotoxicological bioassays: from microcystins to biodegradation
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore the ecotoxicological responses of aquatic organisms at different hierarchical levels to organic contaminants by means of bioassays. The bioassays use novel endpoints or approaches to elucidate the effects of exposure to contaminants and attempt to give mechanistic explanations that could be used to interpret effects at higher hierarchical scales. 2. Avian thermoregulation across age and seasons
Sammanfattning : Animals constantly need to relate to prevailing environmental conditions and regulate their body temperature accordingly. Body temperature regulation in birds and mammals is inherently linked to energy expenditure and, thus, thermoregulation is a physiological mechanism that could trade-off with other costly processes, with potential long-term fitness consequences. 3. Towards CO2 efficient centralised distribution
Sammanfattning : This dissertation treats a topic that has received increasing attention as of late, namely that of the environment and in particular increasing levels of CO2 emissions caused by transport. The aim of the dissertation is to explain how a shipper, through various measures, can reduce transport-related CO2 emissions when centralising a distribution system and how this affects the provision of cost efficient customer service. 4. Analysis and Design of Software-Based Optimal PID Controllers
Sammanfattning : A large process industry can have somewhere between five hundred and five thousand control loops, and PID controllers are used in 90–97% of the cases. It is well-known that only 20–30% of the controllers in the process industry are tuned satisfactorily, but with the methods available today it is considered too time-consuming to optimize each single controller. 5. Microstructure development and mechanical properties of cast and thermo-mechanically treated eutectic high-entropy alloys
Sammanfattning : The recently emerging high-entropy alloys (HEAs) present a novel alloying strategy, significantly expanding the scope of metal alloy design. Single-phase HEAs, nevertheless, suffer from the strength-ductility trade off as seen in conventional metallic materials. LÄS MER
