21. The role of the RNA-binding protein Wig-1 in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression
Sammanfattning : The p53 transcription factor is activated by cellular stress. This triggers transcriptional activation of a number of p53 target genes, leading to responses such as cell cycle arrest and/or induction of apoptosis. Wig-1 is a p53 target gene and its RNA and protein levels increase after p53 protein activation. LÄS MER
22. Remodelling of the cellular environment in Epstein-Barr virus infection
Sammanfattning : For successful infection viruses modify the host cell environment by transcriptional, posttranscriptional or post-translational regulation of cellular signaling pathways. In the work described in this thesis bioinformatics analysis coupled with biochemical validations were used to dissect critical features of these viral strategies in the context of infection by Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), a human herpesvirus associated with lymphoid and epithelial cell tumors. 23. Toll-like receptor activation induced changes in dendritic cells
Sammanfattning : Dendritic cells (DC) are professional antigen-presenting cells that act as a “bridge” between innate and adaptive immunity by the induction and subsequent orchestration of immune responses. The ligation of Toll-like receptors (TLR) and other innate receptors on DC determines their immune-stimulating capacity. LÄS MER
24. Cytochrome P450 in the rat brain : characterization and regulation
Sammanfattning : Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are key enzymes in the metabolism of cholesterol and fatty acids and their derivatives in the body. In the adrenals and gonads these enzymes are involved in steroid hormone biosynthesis, in the liver in bile acid synthesis, in the kidney in synthesis of the calcitropic hormone, calcitriol, and in the cardiovascular system in synthesis of thromboxane A2, a potent inducer of vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation. 25. Estrogen receptor β signalling in mammary epithelial and breast cancer cells
Sammanfattning : Estrogens are key players in the etiology and progression of breast cancer, and mediate their effects through the estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ). ERα plays important roles in proliferation and progression of breast cancer, whereas a distinct function of ERβ in the initiation and development of breast cancer is not yet clearly established.
