16. Candidate genes and the dopamine system : possible implications in complex neurological and psychiatric disease
Sammanfattning : The mesencephalic dopamine (DA) system is strongly involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinsons disease (PD), where symptoms occur after the loss of the vast majority of DA neurons. An involvement of this system also in schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disease (BD) is suggested by the fact that DA receptor antagonists are among the most potent drugs in clinical use for the treatment of these conditions. 17. Somatostatin neurotransmission : studies on experimentally induced cognitive changes and Alzheimer’s disease
Sammanfattning : Several neuropeptides are widely distributed in regions of the central nervous system (CNS) which are associated with cognitive functions. Multiple studies on postmortem Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains have shown depleted neuropeptide content and morphological abnormalities of somatostatin (SS)-containing interneurons in the hippocampus and the cerebral cortex. 18. On neuroinflammation in psychotic disorders
Sammanfattning : Neuroinflammation has been implicated in several psychiatric conditions. Based on experimental studies, the glia-derived tryptophan metabolite kynurenic acid (KYNA) may be especially relevant for positive psychotic symptoms and impaired executive functioning. LÄS MER
19. On mapping the human somatosensory cortex : fMRI and PET imaging
Sammanfattning : This work is based on experiments and simulations for the purpose of mapping the human somatosensory cortex. By using a combination of structural mapping (cytoarchitecture), connectivity mapping, functional mapping, and somatotopical mapping an overview of the organisation of the human somatosensory cortex at different levels is possible. 20. Assessment of bio-based fuel ash effects on magnesia refractory materials in quicklime production kilns
Sammanfattning : Limestone is calcined into quicklime in lime kilns at temperatures above 1000°C. Heat is supplied through combustion inside the kilns, which are insulated with a lining of refractory bricks to mitigate heat loss and to protect the kiln from the hot, chemically aggressive, and mechanically abrasive environment.
