Sammanfattning : Thin-walled structural elements, such as plates, shells and beams are important load carrying components in civil-, mechanical-, automotive- aeronautical- and marine engineering structures. In order to reduce the weight thin-walled structures are given an optimum design making them sensitive to unforeseen deviations in geometry, boundary conditions, material properties and applied loads. Sammanfattning : The use of composite materials in vehicle structures could reduce the weight and thereby the fuel consumption of vehicles. As the road safety of the vehicles must be ensured, it is vital that the energy absorbing capability of the composite materials are similar to or better than the commonly used steel structures. Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns three specific fatigue topics related to steel members in bridges, namely: (1) Modular Bridge Expansion Joints (MBEJs). Several premature fatigue failures of MBEJs have occurred in Europe and USA during the past decades. LÄS MER
4. Thin-walled cylindrical shells under axial compression : prebuckling, buckling, and postbuckling behaviour : Monte Carlo simulation of the scatter in load carrying capacity

Sammanfattning : In this thesis, methods to determine the static postbuckling behaviour of elastic structures undergoing large deformations, are considered and developed. Since the governing non-linear equations usually becomes too complex to be handled analytically, the main focus has been on developing methods that can be incorporated into a numerical solution scheme, such as the finite element method.
