1. Processing and properties of nanocomposites based on polylactic acid, chitin and cellulose
Sammanfattning : The production of bio-based and biodegradable nanocomposites has gained attention during recent years for environmental reasons; however, the large-scale production of these nanocomposites still poses challenges. The objective of this work has been to prepare bio-based and biodegradable nanocomposites via liquid-assisted extrusion and to gain a deeper understanding of the process and the relationship between the process, composition, structure and properties. 2. 3D printing of Green Water Purification Filters : Design towards Sustainable and Scalable Biocomposite Materials
Sammanfattning : The globally escalating water pollution and water scarcity necessitates the development of efficient and sustainable water treatment technologies. This thesis investigates the feasibility of utilizing renewable and waste materials in the form of green composites for the fabrication of water purification filters via Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). 3. Protein-based Packaging Films, Sheets and Composites: Process Development and Functional Properties
Sammanfattning : The depletion of the petroleum resources and a number of environmental concerns led to considerable research efforts in the field of biodegradable materials over the last few decades. Of the diverse range of biopolymers, wheat gluten (WG) stands out as an alternative to synthetic plastics in packaging applications due to its attractive combination of flexibility and strength, high gas barrier properties under low humidity conditions and renewability. 4. Understanding hazards of nanoplastics using Daphnia magna
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents the results of studies focused on effects caused by nano-sized particles using freshwater filter feeder Daphnia magna. I showed that both positively and negatively surface charged PS NPs induced significant mortality in D. magna after a life-time (103 days) of exposure at low concentrations. LÄS MER
5. 3D printing of polymers onto textiles : An innovative approach to develop functional textiles
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims at characterizing tridimensional (3D) printed polymers onto PET textile materials via fused deposition modeling (FDM) that uses both non-conductive and conductive polymers, optimizing their mechanical and electrical properties through statistical modeling and enhancing them with pre and post-treatments and the development of polymer blends. This research work supports the development of technical textiles through 3D printing that may have functionalities. LÄS MER
