11. Molecular Interactions in Thin Films of Biopolymers, Colloids and Synthetic Polyelectrolytes
Sammanfattning : The development of the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique has turned out to be an efficient way to physically modify the surface properties of different materials, for example to improve the adhesive interactions between fibers in paper. The main objective of the work described in this thesis was to obtain fundamental data concerning the adhesive properties of wood biopolymers and LbL films, including the mechanical properties of the thin films, in order to shed light on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the adhesion between these materials. 12. Tailoring adhesion and wetting properties of cellulose fibers and model surfaces
Sammanfattning : The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique was used to modify the surface of cellulose fibers by consecutive adsorption of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) followed by a final adsorbed layer of anionic paraffin wax colloids. Paper hand sheets made from the modified fibers were found to be highly hydrophobic with a contact angle of 150°. LÄS MER
13. 3D Integration of Carbon Based Electronics
Sammanfattning : Carbon-based nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene, which possess superior electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, have been proposed as alternative materials for future electronics. The proposed applications span from the device level, replacing silicon-based transistors, with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) or graphene, to packaging level using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for interconnects. 14. Active cellular forces in variable mechanical microenvironments
Sammanfattning : Our bodies are immensely complex structures, with various systems, organs, and processes that are not only biochemically driven, but strongly dependent on physical mechanics. At the heart of all these processes are cells, which must generate forces to adhere, spread, differentiate, grow, and move. LÄS MER
15. Area Selective Chemical Vapor Deposition of Metallic Films using Plasma Electrons as Reducing Agents
Sammanfattning : Metallic films are used to improve optical, chemical, mechanical, magnetic, and electrical properties and are therefore of high importance in many applications, from electronics and catalysis, environmental protection and health, to wearable and flexible electronic materials. Many of these applications, however, require that the metal films are deposited uniformly on topographically complex surfaces and structures. LÄS MER
