6. Sources of dioxins and other POPs to the marine environment : Identification and apportionment using pattern analysis and receptor modeling
Sammanfattning : In the studies underlying this thesis, various source tracing techniques were applied to environmental samples from the Baltic region. Comprehensive sampling and analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in surface sediments in Swedish coastal and offshore areas resulted in a unique data set for this region. 7. Tracing and apportioning sources of dioxins using multivariate pattern recognition techniques
Sammanfattning : High levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in edible fish in the Baltic Sea have raised health concerns in the Baltic region and the rest of Europe. Thus, there are urgent needs to characterize sources in order to formulate effective mitigation strategies. LÄS MER
8. Effects of Varying Combustion Conditions on PCDD/F Formation
Sammanfattning : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are by-products emitted from combustion sources such as municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration plants. These organic compounds are recognized as toxic, bioaccumulative and persistent in the environment. LÄS MER
9. Trace analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxines, dibenzofurans and related compounds in environmental matrices
Sammanfattning : In this thesis sample extraction, clean up procedures and quantitative and qualitative analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans and related compounds are discussed, as well as aspects on the sampling of some complex environmental matrices. The matrices are mostly from the aquatic environment but other samples are also dealt with, such as urban and remote air samples, samples from environments with heavy automobile traffic and samples from one municipal incinerator, waste water treatment plants etc. LÄS MER
10. The relationship between fly ash chemistry and the thermal formation of polychlorinated pollutants during waste incineration
Sammanfattning : The thermal formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), biphenyls (PCBs), and naphthalenes (PCNs) is a major problem in waste incineration. Ideally, rather than relying on air cleaning systems and treatment techniques, their formation should be minimized or, if possible eliminated. LÄS MER
