1. Polar Growth in Streptomyces venezuelae
Sammanfattning : Cell polarity is an ubiquitous and important phenomenon relevant for a plethora of cellular functions. One type of cell polarity is polar growth, where an organism only synthesizes cell envelope at designated locations in the cell. This requires highly organized localization of cellular activities. 2. Electronic materials : growth and characterisation
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the InSb(111), InAs(111) and GaSb(001) surfaces have been studied by means of time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy based upon the femtosecond laser system. The pump-and-probe technique allows to analyse both electron states in the valence band and normally unpopulated electron states above the valence band, which can be occupied by transiently excited carriers at the optically pumped surface. 3. Viral Loop Dynamics in Temperate and Polar Freshwaters
Sammanfattning : All cellular organisms in aquatic environments are susceptible to virus attack. Viruses are the smallest but most abundant biological entities in freshwaters. This thesis describes interactions between viruses and bacteria in temperate and polar freshwaters with particular emphasis on Arctic and Antarctic aquatic systems. LÄS MER
4. Coiled coil cytoskeleton in cell architecture and osmotic stress response in Streptomyces
Sammanfattning : Coiled coil proteins emerge as important determinants of bacterial cellular organization. Several such proteins display properties characteristic to metazoan intermediate filament (IF) proteins, and are therefore designated bacterial IF-like proteins. LÄS MER
5. Metastable Alumina from Theory: Bulk, Surface, and Growth of κ-Al2O3
Sammanfattning : Aluminas are materials of high technological importance that show a fascinating structural flexibility, with a large amount of different phases (alpha, gamma, eta, delta, kappa, chi, ...) and phase transitions at relatively high temperatures. LÄS MER
