11. Ventilation distribution in the lung periphery measured by inert gas washout : influence of increased gravity, anti-G suit pressure, body posture, and breathing pattern
Sammanfattning : The lung is highly sensitive to forces of gravity and acceleration, and to surrounding pressures. This thesis aimed to assess the effects on ventilation distribution in peripheral lung units when changing the direction or magnitude of the gravitational vector and when compressing the lower body half with an anti-G suit (AGS). 12. Modelling Transport of Non-Spherical Particles in Small Channel Flow
Sammanfattning : A model has been developed to predict the movement of oblate and prolate particles on amicro- and nano-scale in laminar channel flow, both for purposes of statistical aggregationand to study motion of single particles. For the purpose of this thesis the model has beenadapted to examine particle deposition patterns in the human lung and the filtration ofparticles during manufacturing of composites, but the possibilities of the model extendto all areas where the particle Stokes and Reynolds numbers are small. 13. Classical Aspects on the Road to Quantum Gravity: A Study in the Framework of the New Variables
Sammanfattning : There has been a lot of progress in the quest for the structure of spacetime since a canonical non-perturbative quantization program for general relativity was set up ten years ago. The crucial ideas are two choices of coordinates on phase space. LÄS MER
14. Wetting and Capillary Flow of Surfactant Solutions and Inks
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents results of a series of experimental studies on the spreading dynamics of small drops of complex solutions on solid surfaces. The capillary flow dynamics of complex solutions have also been investigated. LÄS MER
15. Suspensions of finite-size rigid particles in laminar and turbulent flows
Sammanfattning : Dispersed multiphase flows occur in many biological, engineering and geophysical applications. Understanding the behavior of suspensions is a difficult task. In the present work, we numerically study the behavior of suspensions of finite-size rigid particles in different flows. LÄS MER
