1. Photoelectrochemical Processes on Fe2O3 Based Model Anodes
Sammanfattning : One possibility to partially satisfy the ever-increasing energy needs of modern society, without compromising the Earth’s environment through e.g. global warming, consists in harvesting solar energy and storing it as hydrogen produced from water splitting. This can potentially be achieved on a large scale using photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. LÄS MER
2. High Affinity Synthetic Molecular Binders for Proteins : Design, Synthesis and Evaluation
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the design and synthesis of small molecule derivatives and their polypeptide conjugates as high affinity binders for proteins: the D-dimer protein (D-dimer), a biomarker for diagnosis of thromboembolic diseases; human myeloperoxidase (MPO), a biomarker for cardiovascular diseases; and chitinases, potential targets for asthma therapy. The interactions between the synthetic binder molecules and those proteins were evaluated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor analysis and fluorescence spectroscopy. LÄS MER
3. Design and synthesis of HIV-1 protease inhibitors
Sammanfattning : Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The C2-symmetric HIV-1 protease is one of the prime targets for chemotherapy in the treatment of the HIV infection. Inhibition of HIV-1 protease leads to immature and non-infectious viral particles. 4. MECHANISMS OF ENHANCED ACTIVITY OF MODEL TiO2/CARBON and TiO2/METAL NANOCOMPOSITE PHOTOCATALYSTS
Sammanfattning : TiO2 is the most widely used photocatalyst for energy and environmental applications because of its outstanding physical and chemical properties. However, the quantum efficiency of TiO2 is greatly diminished by fast electron-hole pairs recombination and light absorption only in the UV region. LÄS MER
5. Rational design of nanoparticles for biomedical imaging and photovoltaic applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to rationally design nanoparticles and promote their applications in biomedical imaging and photovoltaic cells. Quantum dots (QDs) are promising fluorescent probes for biomedical imaging. LÄS MER
