6. Plant-associated soil communities : Patterns, drivers and aboveground consequences
Sammanfattning : Soil contains a wealth of diversity – bacteria, fungi, nematodes, arthropods and earthworms are just some of the many organisms found belowground. These organisms play an important role in shaping the soil environment and they strongly influence plant fitness, diversity and community composition. LÄS MER
7. Cyanobacterial genome evolution subsequent to domestication by a plant (Azolla)
Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria are an ancient and globally distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes including species capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) into biologically available ammonia via the enzyme complex nitrogenase. The ability to form symbiotic interactions with eukaryotic hosts is a notable feature of cyanobacteria and one which, via an ancient endosymbiotic event, led to the evolution of chloroplasts and eventually to the plant dominated biosphere of the globe. 8. Phytophthora and Oak Decline - Impact on Seedlings and Mature Trees in Forest Soils
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigated the occurrence of soilborne species of the plant pathogenic genus Phytophthora in southern Swedish oak forests and their possible involvement in southern Swedish oak decline. The emphasis was on the impact of P. quercina on Quercus robur in acid forest soils. LÄS MER
9. Phytostabilization of mine tailings covered with fly ash and sewage sludge
Sammanfattning : Establishing plant communities is essential for the restoration of contaminated land. As potential cover materials, fly ash and sewage sludge can prevent formation of acid mine drainage from sulfidic mine waste. LÄS MER
10. Sustainable management of dredged sediments : potential recovery of valuable compounds
Sammanfattning : Dredging of sediments occurs worldwide to increase water depth in harbours, bays, lakes and rivers, as well as to recover aquatic ecosystems. Landfilling and open-ocean discharge are traditional disposal routes for dredged material. However, the methods are restricted by environmental and legal concerns. LÄS MER
