1. Linking plant population dynamics to the local environment and forest succession
Sammanfattning : Linking environmental variation to population dynamics is necessary to understand and predict how the environment influences species abundances and distributions. I used demographic, environmental and trait data of forest herbs to study effects of spatial variation in environmental factors on populations as well as environmental change in terms of effects of forest succession on field layer plants. 2. The actinorhizal plant Datisca glomerata : interpreting its symbiotic adaptations by omics-based comparisons with model and non-model organisms
Sammanfattning : Nitrogen is the element that most often limits plant growth and development. Common agricultural practices rely on the application of large quantities of industrially-produced nitrogen fertilizer, which poses a worldwide environmental threat. Sustainable agriculture encourages the use of biologically fixed nitrogen. LÄS MER
3. Plant cell-inspiredmicrocontainers: Fabrication, Characterization and Applications
Sammanfattning : Biomimetic materials have been inspiring mankind since a longtime for applications in a variety of fields. In particular, the production of lipidbasedvesicles have aided in our understanding of a variety of functions in animalcells, and also served as e.g. drug delivery systems and bioreactors. LÄS MER
4. Distribution Patterns and Metapopulation Dynamics of Epiphytic Mosses and Lichens
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the relative importance of local conditions, dispersal and dynamics of the trees on epiphyte distribution patterns and colonization-extinction dynamics. Study species are the mosses Orthotrichum speciosum and O. obtusifolium, and the red-listed Neckera pennata. LÄS MER
5. Plant Aquaporins: A study of expression, localization, specificity, and regulation
Sammanfattning : Aquaporins, or Major Intrinsic Proteins (MIPs), are integral proteins that facilitate transport of water and other small neutral solutes across biological membranes. They belong to a well conserved and ancient family of proteins, present in all organisms ranging from bacteria to plants and humans. LÄS MER
