1. Climate Effects on Phytoplankton Biomass and Functional Groups
Sammanfattning : Future climate in temperate regions is projected to get warmer and in many cases wetter. This poses questions about how phytoplankton in our lakes will respond. LÄS MER
2. Trophic ecology of meiofauna : Response to sedimentation of phytoplankton blooms in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : Marine soft sediments are the second largest habitat on Earth. How animal communities in this habitat are structured is a central issue in marine ecology. Food is an important limiting factor for many benthic populations, and settling organic matter from phytoplankton blooms is of vital importance to them. LÄS MER
3. Direct and indirect effects of fish predation and excretion in aquatic food webs
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms by which planktivorous fish can affect planktonic communities in lakes and how they may affect benthic communities through their effects on planktonic communities. In a laboratory experiment, nutrients released by fish increased algal biomass and altered phytoplankton community structure, suggesting that fish can affect phytoplankton by directly releasing nutrients. 4. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton
Sammanfattning : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. LÄS MER
5. Baltic Sea phytoplankton in a changing environment
Sammanfattning : Future climate scenarios in the Baltic Sea project increasing sea surface temperature, as well as increasing precipitation and river runoff resulting in decreased salinity. These changes can severely impact the dynamics and function of brackish water communities, specifically phytoplankton. LÄS MER
