1. Physiological Stress Reactivity in Late Pregnancy
Sammanfattning : During pregnancy, the basal activity is increased in both of our major stress response systems: the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. At the same time, the reactivity towards stressors is reduced. These alterations sustain maternal and fetal homeostasis, and are involved in the regulation of gestational length. LÄS MER
2. Physiological response to exercise in the Icelandic horse
Sammanfattning : This thesis examined the exercise physiology of the Icelandic horse by: 1) studying physiological response in stallions and mares of different ages performing a true breed evaluation field test (BEFT); 2) comparing the effect of ridden tölt and trot at three speeds on physiological response; 3) evaluating physiological response to a simulated 100 m flying pace race; 4) measuring the effect of increasing body weight ratio (BWR) of rider to horse (20, 25, 30, and 35 %) on physiological response in an standardised incremental field exercise test at tölt at 5.4 m/s; and 5) determining the effect of rider on physiological response. 3. Impact of food quality on aquatic consumers : Behavioral and physiological adjustments
Sammanfattning : Food quantity and quality together determine growth rates of consumers and the utilisation efficiencies of available resources in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The effect of food quality on the performance of consumers is dependent on both, its direct influence on ingestion and assimilation rates, and on the behavioural and physiological adjustments of consumers to their food environment. 4. The effects of glucocorticoids on brown fat : physiological and molecular studies
Sammanfattning : Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is the main site for non-shivering thermogenesis in most mammals. The BAT-specific uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) uncouples substrate oxidation from ATP production and hereby decreases metabolic efficiency. LÄS MER
5. Seagrasses in warming oceans : physiological and biogeochemical responses
Sammanfattning : The exponential increase of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations over the past 50 years has caused a rise in the global average temperature by more than 1ºC above pre-industrial levels. Ninety-three percent of this heat energy has been absorbed and stored by the oceans, increasing their temperatures, particularly in surface waters. LÄS MER
