1. Computational Problems in Modeling Evolution and Inferring Gene Families
Sammanfattning : Over the last few decades, phylogenetics has emerged as a very promising field, facilitating a comparative framework to explain the genetic relationships among all the living organisms on earth. These genetic relationships are typically represented by a bifurcating phylogenetic tree — the tree of life. LÄS MER
2. Atypical Solute Carriers : Identification, evolutionary conservation, structure and histology of novel membrane-bound transporters
Sammanfattning : Solute carriers (SLCs) constitute the largest family of membrane-bound transporter proteins in humans, and they convey transport of nutrients, ions, drugs and waste over cellular membranes via facilitative diffusion, co-transport or exchange. Several SLCs are associated with diseases and their location in membranes and specific substrate transport makes them excellent as drug targets. LÄS MER
3. Reticulate Evolution in Diphasiastrum (Lycopodiaceae)
Sammanfattning : In this thesis relationships and the occurrence of reticulate evolutionary events in the club moss genus Diphasiastrum are investigated. Diphasiastrum is initially established as a monophyletic group within Lycopodiaceae using non recombinant chloroplast sequence data. LÄS MER
4. Development of New Methods for Inferring and Evaluating Phylogenetic Trees
Sammanfattning : Inferring phylogeny is a difficult computational problem. Heuristics are necessary to minimize the time spent evaluating non optimal trees. In paper I, we developed an approach for heuristic searching, using a genetic algorithm. Genetic algorithms mimic the natural selections ability to solve complex problems. LÄS MER
5. Ecological and evolutionary assembly processes and metacommunity structure
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to elucidate the link between abiotic and biotic effects and biogeographical contingencies, eco-evolutionary assembly processes, and community structure in a spatially explicit metacommunity framework. To this end, we used structure analysis of naturally sampled and experimentally manipulated marine bacterial communities and mathematical eco-evolutionary modeling and simulations of metacommunity assembly.
