1. Organophosphates and phthalates in air and dust from indoor environments : Method development and applied measurements
Sammanfattning : Organophosphate and phthalate esters are polymer additives that are frequently found in air and dust in indoor environments. This thesis describes the development and application of air sampling and selective mass spectrometric (MS) determination of these two compound groups. LÄS MER
2. Environmental fate of chemicals released from consumer products : Multimedia modelling strategies
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis was to assess the environmental fate and transport of chemicals emitted from consumer products through the development and application of modelling tools. The following hypotheses were tested: i) Multimedia fate models can be applied in a multistage assessment process to emerging chemicals when limited knowledge exists to identify the likely environmental fate and to direct further research; ii) the indoor environment acts as a source of anthropogenic substances in consumer products to the outdoor environment; and iii) chemical removal pathways in the indoor environment are important for the fate of organic chemicals in densely populated areas. 3. What contributes to human body burdens of phthalate esters? : An experimental approach
Sammanfattning : Phthalate esters (PEs) and alternative plasticizers used as additives in numerous consumer products are continuously released into the environment leading to subsequent human exposure. The ubiquitous presence and potential adverse health effects (e.g. LÄS MER
4. Assessing human exposure to phthalates, alternative plasticizers and organophosphate esters
Sammanfattning : Phthalate esters (PEs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) are common indoor pollutants frequently detected in environmental (dust, air), personal (hand wipes, diet) and human matrices (urine, serum etc.). LÄS MER
5. Fate of phthalic acid esters during digestion of municipal solid waste under landfill conditions
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis has been to investigate whether anaerobic microorganisms developing in acidogenic and methanogenic landfill environments have the potential to degrade phthalic acid esters (PAEs) and what kinds of intermediates may be formed, assuming PAE degradation. PAEs form a group of compounds widely used in huge amounts worldwide, mainly as plasticiser in PVC-plastics. LÄS MER
