1. Solar radiation effects on decomposition and decomposers of plant litter in lakes
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarizes the results of a series of experiments, from test tube up to field study scale, performed to increase the understanding of solar radiation effects on decomposition and microbial decomposers of plant litter in stagnant water of littoral zones. In conclusion, I suggest that fungi play a significant role in the decomposition of plant litter submersed in lakes, and that their distribution is dependent on detritus quality and water chemistry, but also tends to be inversely related to the occurrence of bacteria attached to the litter. 2. Internal oxygen transport to below-ground parts: importance for emergent macrophytes
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines factors regulating growth and distribution of emergent plants with focus on effects of oxygen supply to the roots. Greenhouse experiments revealed that P. australis acclimatizes to specific water depths with phenotypic plasticity. LÄS MER
3. Role of plants in treating metal-polluted waters in wetlands
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of wetland plants in wetland treatment of metal-polluted waters. The specific aims were to investigate metal uptake in various wetland plant species; whether and how wetland plants tolerate high metal concentrations in their immediate surroundings, and how the pH and metal concentrations of polluted waters influence metal uptake in wetland plants were also investigated. 4. Anadromous Pike in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : The pike (Esox lucius) is a major predator and top-down regulator in the Baltic Sea where it exists in two sympatric forms. One spawn in streams and rivers and the other one spawn in the sea. During the last decades, the habitats for both of these forms have developed in a negative way. LÄS MER
5. Nitrogen removal in treatment wetlands : Factors influencing spatial and temporal variations
Sammanfattning : Decreasing the nitrogen transport from land to surrounding seas is a major task throughout the world to limit eutrophication of the coastal areas. Several approaches are currently used, including the establishment of wetlands, to decrease the transport of nitrogen. LÄS MER
