  1. 1. Behaviour under predation risk - antipredator strategies, behavioural syndromes and sex-specific responses in aquatic prey

    Författare :Sanna Harris; Biodiversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phenotypic integration; Poecilia reticulata; Asellus aquaticus; behavioural syndromes; chemical cues; predation; antipredator behaviour;

    Sammanfattning : In many natural ecosystems, predation is well recognized as a strong evolutionary force, and predator-mediated selection has been demonstrated to induce changes in prey morphology, life history and behaviour. In my thesis, I have focused on behavioural responses in aquatic prey under the risk of predation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. In vivo properties of neural stem cells after transplantation into the rat brain-Studies of phenotypic differentiation and functional integration using cell-specific labelling and electrophysiological techniques

    Författare :Ulrica Englund Johansson; Peter Eriksson; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell line; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; functional integration; electrophysiology; retrograde tracing; immortalized; GFP; migration; axonal projections; glia; neuron; transplantation; stem cell. progenitor cell; CNS; Biomedical Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, we have examined the in vivo properties of in vitro expanded human and rat neural stem-and progenitor cells after transplantation into the neonatal and adult rat brain. The survival and differentiation of the grafted cells were assessed using species-specific antisera, and pre-labelling with the reporter gene green fluorescent protein (GFP). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Cell Replacement Therapy for Parkinson's Disease: Potential for Circuitry Repair

    Författare :Tiago Cardoso; Utvecklings- och regenerativ neurobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rabies-based tracing; Parkinson s disease cell therapy; Cell Replacement Therapy; Human embryonic stem cells; Dopamine neuron; Synaptic integration; circuitry repair;

    Sammanfattning : The derivation of dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) now offers a promising alternative to fetal tissue for cell replacement therapy (CRT) in Parkinson´s disease (PD). Using the appropriate chemical cues in vitro, hESCs can be patterned towards bona-fide ventral midbrain (VM) DA neurons that survive, reinnervate, release DA and provide functional recovery when transplanted into rodent and non-human primate models of PD. 4. 4. Statistical methods for the detection, analyses and integration of biomarkers in the human genome and transcriptome

    Författare :Chen Suo; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Most human diseases have been shown to have a genetic basis that is linked to regulation of gene expression at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional level. In the central dogma of biology, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is transcribed to messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), and then translated into proteins; dysfunction in any of these processes may contribute to the development of disease. 5. 5. A phenotypic study of a unique respiratory strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and its application in protein production

    Författare :Cecilia Ferndahl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : During aerobic growth at high glucose concentrations, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae prefers to catabolise glucose through fermentation rather than through respiration. Previously fully respiratory growth could only be achieved when a low external glucose concentration was maintained, in fed-batch and continuous cultures, but since the development of the respiratory strain, TM6*, in our laboratory this can now be achieved even at high external glucose concentration.
