16. Membrane traffic in neutrophils and neutrophil-like cells
Sammanfattning : The neutrophil constitutes the first line of defence against invading organisms and its primary function is to recognize, phagocytose and kill intruding microorganisms. In this thesis, the membrane traffic in neutrophils and neutrophil-like cells was studied. Non-opsonised S. LÄS MER
17. Structural and functional studies of C4b-binding protein (C4BP)
Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis is complement inhibitor C4b-binding protein (C4BP), on which we have performed both structural and functional studies. Complement is part of the innate immune defence and eliminates microbes, solubilises immune complexes and is involved in the clearance of apoptotic cells. LÄS MER
18. Immunoglobulin-binding bacterial surface proteins; biomedical tools and virulence factors
Sammanfattning : Many bacteria express immunoglobulin(Ig)-binding proteins that interact with Ig in a non-immune manner. Several of these Ig-binding bacterial proteins have been well characterized and are widely used as reagents for analysis and purification of Ig's. LÄS MER
19. Studies on experimental anaerobic infections of the middle ear and on the polymorphonuclear leukocyte function under anaerobic conditions
Sammanfattning : Despite the clinical importance of anaerobic bacteria in otitis media and the uncertainty regarding the proper treatment of the anaerobic focal infection, few experimental studies focused upon the role of these microorganisms in otitis media have been published. In the present investigation a guinea-pig model for the induction of anaerobic monoinfections in the middle ear was described. LÄS MER
20. Role of GPIbαlpha Clustering and N-linked Carbohydrates in the Clearance of Refrigerated Platelets
Sammanfattning : The thesis focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which: 1) the macrophage alphaM-subunit recognizes betaN-acetylglucosamine (betaGlcNAc) residues on the von Willebrand factor receptor complex ((GPIbalpha,beta/IX)2V or vWfR) on refrigerated platelets and 2) refrigeration changes vWfR to elicit recognition through alphaMbeta2. Until recently, the only well-established mechanisms affecting platelet survival were antibody-mediated platelet clearance, consumption of platelets by coagulation reactions, and loss due to massive bleeding.
