6. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen in host defence against Francisella tularensis
Sammanfattning : Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia, is a potent human and animal pathogen. Initially upon infection of the host, intramacrophage proliferation of F. tularensis occurs but after activation of the acquired host immunity, the phagocytes become activated to kill the bacterium. In my thesis, I focused on mechanisms utilized by F. LÄS MER
7. Modulation of mononuclear phagocyte function in the dissemination of Toxoplasma gondii
Sammanfattning : Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular Apicomplexan parasite that could possibly infect all warm-blooded animals. Acute infections with T. LÄS MER
8. Phagocyte-induced apoptosis in natural killer cells and T cells. Role of reactive oxygen species and regulation by histamine
Sammanfattning : Malignant tumors frequently contain an infiltrate of leukocytes, usually cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage and lymphocytes with anti-tumor activity such as natural killer (NK) cells and T cells. Clinical and experimental data suggest that monocytes/macrophages in tumors inhibit functions of adjacent NK cells/T cells and thereby suppress lymphocyte-dependent anti-tumor immunity. LÄS MER
9. Direct and phagocyte-mediated lipid peroxidation of lung surfactant by group B streptococci and other bacteria : protective effect of antioxidants
Sammanfattning : Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), caused by surfactant deficiency, is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm neonates. Further, infants with systemic neonatal infection or pneumonia often have signs of RDS. LÄS MER
10. Structural Insights into the Acquisition and Storage of Iron
Sammanfattning : It is of vital importance to understand the systems for iron metabolism and this thesis contributes to this by providing insights into the structure and function of the acquisition and homeostasis of iron. The two proteins that have been primarily investigated are a ferric reductase from Arabidopsis thaliana called FRO2 and a mitochondrial iron chaperone from Saccharomyces cerevisiae called frataxin.
