  1. 11. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies

    Författare :Elvia García López; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Peritoneal dialysis; icodextrin; icodextrin metabolites; ultrafiltration; alphaarnylase activity; gel-filtration HPLC;

    Sammanfattning : Icodextrin (ICO, or polyglucose) is an effective osmotic agent for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients (pts). ICO is a soluble polymeric form of glucose with an average molecular 'weight range from 13,000 to 19,000 dalton. Glucose is absorbed from the peritoneal cavity by diffusion. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Analysis of risk factors in patients with severe chronic kidney disease. The role of atorvastatin

    Författare :Benny Holmberg; Bernd G Stegmayr; Christer Andersson; Peter M Nilsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Atorvastatin; cholesterol; chronic kidney disease; haemodialysis; cholesterol; lipids; peritoneal dialysis; risk factors; statins; inter dialysis weight gain;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aim: There had been no randomized end-point studies with statins for patients with severe renal failure. The purpose of this prospective, open, randomized, controlled study was to investigate whether atorvastatin (10 mg/day) would alter cardiovascular end-points and the overall mortality rate of patients with chronic kidney disease stage 4 or 5 (creatinine clearanceMaterial & Methods: This was an open, prospective, randomized study. 3. 13. Mathematical modeling of fluid and solute transport in peritoneal dialysis

    Författare :Jacek Waniewski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :diffusion; convective transport; perfusion; lymphatic absorption; ultrafiltration; osmosis; continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis;

    Sammanfattning : Optimization of peritoneal dialysis schedule and dialysis fluid composition needs, among others, methods for quantitative assessment of fluid and solute transport. Furthermore, an integrative quantitative description of physiological processes within the tissue, which contribute to the net transfer of fluid and solutes, is necessary for interpretation of the data and for predictions of the outcome of possible intervention into the peritoneal transport system. 4. 14. Impact of peritoneal solute transport rate on nutritional status and clinical outcome in peritoneal dialysis patients

    Författare :Sung Hee Chung; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adequacy of dialysis; comorbid diseases; fluid removal; inflammation; mortality; malnutrition; peritoneal dialysis; peritoneal solute transport rate; residual renal function.;

    Sammanfattning : The transport characteristics of the peritoneal membrane may be influenced by inflammation and various comorbid diseases (CMD) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. On the other hand, the peritoneal solute transport rate (PSTR) may influence patient characteristics such as nutritional status as well as the clinical outcome of PD patients. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies

    Författare :Elvia Garcia Lopez; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Icodextrin is a glucose polymer which is used as osmotic agent to provide sustained ultrafiltration (UF) during the long (8-16 hours) dwell in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aims of this thesis were to study: the metabolism of icodextrin in the peritoneal cavity and in the circulation of PD patients and non-uremic rats, the role of alpha-amylase in its hydrolysis, and the rate of breakdown of a synthetic maltoheptaose (G7) ex vivo which we propose as a novel measure of amylase mediated oligosaccharide metabolism.
