1. Peripheral nerve reconstruction. Studies on cellular and acellular iso-, allo- and xenografts
Sammanfattning : The best results after a nerve injury with a defect are achieved by a nerve reconstruction procedure using autologous nerve grafts. However, limitations include insufficient amount of suitable donor material and donor site morbidity. The aim of the present thesis was to study alternative nerve grafts, i.e. LÄS MER
2. Peripheral nerve function : metabolic features, clinical assessment, and heat shock protein 27
Sammanfattning : Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication among patients with diabetes mellitus, but whether peripheral neuropathy is present in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is debatable. In order to identify and diagnose peripheral neuropathy correctly, it is important to evaluate diagnostic tools that can be implemented in routine health care to assess both large and small nerve fibre function. 3. Cell activation and nerve regeneration following peripheral nerve injury
Sammanfattning : The effect of short time vibration exposure and tourniquet compression on nerve regeneration in rats was studied with special reference to cell activation. One of the hindlimbs was conditioned by either vibration exposure (5 hours / day - 5 consecutive days) or compression (150-300 mmHg for 30-120 minutes), which was followed by a recovery period of 0-7 days. 4. Sutures bridging nerve defects
Sammanfattning : A new and simple method for the repair of nerve defects, in which sutures alone are used to guide regeneration between the nerve endings, was developed. Bilateral seven to 17 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged by continuous longitudinal sutures with or without different modifications, by conventional autologous nerve grafts or direct repair under tension as controls. 5. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair
Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants.
