11. Lung hyaluronan and lung water in the perinatal period
Sammanfattning : Hyaluronan is an important component of the lung extracellular matrix, with a high capacity for water immobilization, but information on perinatal changes in the lung hyaluronan concentration and their association with changes in the lung water content is limited. In this study, conducted both in rabbit pups and in human infants, we investigated changes in the hyaluronan concentration and distribution in the lung and in the lung water content after preterm or term birth, and changes produced by common antenatal and postnatal pathological conditions and treatments. 12. Child survival in Rwanda: Challenges and potential for improvement : Population- and hospital-based studies
Sammanfattning : After the 1994 genocide and collapse of the health system, Rwanda initiated major social and health reforms in order to reduce child mortality and health inequities in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals. The aim of this thesis was to assess trends in under-five mortality (U5M) and equity in child survival, to study social barriers for improved perinatal and neonatal survival, and to evaluate Helping Babies Breathe (HBB), a newborn resuscitation program. 13. Water transport through perinatal skin : Barrier function and aquaporin water channels
Sammanfattning : While constituting a well functioning interface with the aqueous environment in utero, the skin offers a poor barrier after very preterm birth. As a result, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is high, a fact which has important clinical consequences in these infants. LÄS MER
14. Management of late term pregnancy
Sammanfattning : Background: The optimal time point to intervene and induce labour in women with a low-risk pregnancy, in order to decrease perinatal adverse outcome, is up for debate. Some advocate for induction of labour (IOL) at 41 gestational weeks (GW) and others for expectant management (EM) until 42 GW. LÄS MER
15. Perinatal programming and neuroendocrine function
Sammanfattning : Perinatal growth and development are dependent on a sufficient metabolic, hormonal and nutritional environment. Suboptimal conditions during specific perinatal developmental windows can lead to permanent programming of physiological systems in the fetus or newborn, with implications for adult health. LÄS MER
