1. Lung hyaluronan and lung water in the perinatal period
Sammanfattning : Hyaluronan is an important component of the lung extracellular matrix, with a high capacity for water immobilization, but information on perinatal changes in the lung hyaluronan concentration and their association with changes in the lung water content is limited. In this study, conducted both in rabbit pups and in human infants, we investigated changes in the hyaluronan concentration and distribution in the lung and in the lung water content after preterm or term birth, and changes produced by common antenatal and postnatal pathological conditions and treatments. 2. Antisecretory factor in the perinatal period
Sammanfattning : Preterm birth is the major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Human milk, especially mothers’ own milk, has many health benefits for infants, especially infants born preterm. The causes of preterm birth are not yet fully understood. LÄS MER
3. Perinatal Risk Factors for Childhood Leukemia
Sammanfattning : The aim of the studies described in this thesis was to assess the association between certain perinatal factors and the risk of childhood lymphatic and myeloid leukemia and infant leukemia. The five studies presented were all conducted in Sweden as population-based case-control studies. LÄS MER
4. Essential fatty acids in the perinatal period. Short and long term effects in a rat model
Sammanfattning : Nutritional factors during a sensitive perinatal period may lead to developmental adaptations proposed to program for pathological conditions later in life. An adequate supply of essential fatty acids (EFA) during pregnancy and lactation is crucial for optimal fetal and postnatal development. LÄS MER
5. Perinatal essential fatty acid deficiency in mice: effects on metabolism and behaviour
Sammanfattning : Maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and lactation influences the health of the adult offspring and an adequate supply of essential fatty acids is important for foetal and postnatal growth and development. The overall aim of this thesis was to study short- and long-term effects of perinatal essential fatty acid deficiency in mice on metabolism and behaviour. LÄS MER
