  1. 1. Cold-climate landforms on Mars and Earth-analogues in Svalbard

    Författare :Andreas Johnsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mars; Svalbard; Spitsbergen; periglacial; ice; permafrost; Earth-analogues; terrestrial analogues; geomorphology; landforms; solifluction; debris flow; gully; craters; cold-climate;

    Sammanfattning : Periglacial landforms on Earth reflect cold-climate conditions and are intimately related to processes due to the presence of ground ice and perennially frozen ground, permafrost. The overall objective of this thesis is to investigate the potential of Svalbard as an analogue to Mars cold-climate landforms, and explore past and present processes and surface conditions on Mars by inference from morphological counterparts in Svalbard. 2. 2. Permafrost carbon in a changing Arctic : On periglacial landscape dynamics, organic matter characteristics, and the stability of a globally significant carbon pool

    Författare :Niels Weiss; Peter Kuhry; Duane Froese; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Permafrost; Carbon; Climate; Arctic; Soil; Organic Matter; Cryosphere; Geomorphology; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Organic matter (OM) in arctic permafrost ground contains about twice as much carbon (C) as is currently present in the atmosphere. Climate change is particularly strong in the Arctic, and could cause a considerable part of the OM in permafrost to thaw out, decompose, and be released as greenhouse gases; further enhancing global warming. 3. 3. Landscape partitioning and burial processes of soil organic carbon in contrasting areas of continuous permafrost

    Författare :Juri Palmtag; Peter Kuhry; Gustaf Hugelius; Stephan Gruber; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; soil organic carbon; total nitrogen; permafrost; cryoturbation; geomorphology; land cover classification; slope processes; texture; upscaling; carbon nitrogen ratio; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Recent studies have shown that permafrost soils in the northern circumpolar region store almost twice as much carbon as the atmosphere. Since soil organic carbon (SOC) pools have large regional and landscape-level variability, detailed SOC inventories from across the northern permafrost region are needed to assess potential remobilization of SOC with permafrost degradation and to quantify the permafrost carbon-climate feedback on global warming. 4. 4. Relict non-glacial surfaces and autochthonous blockfields in the northern Swedish mountains

    Författare :Bradley W. Goodfellow; Arjen Stroeven; Clas Hättestrand; Johan Kleman; Krister Jansson; Adrian Hall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blockfield; chemical weathering; cosmogenic exposure dating; glaciated landscape; northern Sweden; periglacial geomorphology; relict surface; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning; Geography; Physical Geography;

    Sammanfattning : Relict non-glacial surfaces occur in many formerly glaciated landscapes, where they represent areas that have escaped significant glacial modification. Frequently distinguished by blockfield mantles, relict non-glacial surfaces are important archives of long-term weathering and landscape evolution processes. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Alpine lake sediment archives and catchment geomorphology : causal relationships and implications for paleoenvironmental reconstructions

    Författare :Lena Rubensdotter; Gunhild Rosqvist; Ingmar Borgström; Eve Arnold; Jens-Ove Näslund; Catherine Souch; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; alpine lakes; geomorphology; lacustrine sedimentation; slope processes; glaciofluvial; Holocene; Swedish Lapland; Physical geography; Naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Lake sediments are frequently used as archives of climate and environmental change. Minerogenic sediment variability in alpine lakes is often used to reconstruct past glacier and slope process activity. Alpine lake sediments can however have many different origins, which may induce errors in paleoenvironmental reconstructions. LÄS MER
