1. Interactions with pain-related systems - Towards new electrical treatments for chronic pain
Sammanfattning : Background. Persistent intolerable pain is still an unsolved issue with a huge socioeconomic impact. To develop appropriate treatments, it is crucial to understand the complex mechanisms underlying pain and how they change during sustained pain stimuli or during pathological conditions. LÄS MER
2. Neurotransmission in CNS regions involved in pain modulation : neurochemical effects of analgesic drugs and spinal cord stimulation in the spinal cord and midbrain periaqueductal grey of the rat
Sammanfattning : The dorsal hom of the spinal cord and the midbrain penaqueductal grey matter (PAG) are important regions for pain modulation. In this thesis the effects of opioids and spinal cord stimulation (SCS) on the release of gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), substance P (SP) and neurotensin (NT) were investigated in these regions of the rat by in vivo microdialysis. 3. Substance P Endopeptidase : Purification and Characterizataion of Enzyme Activity and Evaluation of its Function during Stressful Condition
Sammanfattning : The purification and biochemical characterization of the substance P (SP) hydrolyzing enzyme, substance P endopeptidase (SPE), have been carried out; with subsequent orientation in neurobiological fundamental processes involved in opioid dependence, withdrawal, and heat-stress.SPE was purified from rat spinal cord, human spinal cord and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), rat ventral tegemental area (VTA), and rat hippocampus. 4. Fear, Startle, and Fear-Potentiated Startle : Probing Emotion in the Human Brain
Sammanfattning : The present thesis explored the neurobiological basis of three aspects of defense behaviors in humans. Positron emission tomography methodology was used, and changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were measured as an index of neural activity. LÄS MER
5. Imaging Chronic Pain and Inflammation : Positron Emission Tomography Studies of Whiplash Associated Disorder
Sammanfattning : This thesis is on chronic neck pain after a rear impact car injury, so called whiplash associated disorder (WAD). Three empirical studies using positron emission tomography (PET) with different radioligands have been performed. LÄS MER
