  1. 11. Conformational Stability!? : Synthesis and Conformational Studies of Unnatural Backbone Modified Peptides

    Författare :Anna S. Norgren; Per I. Arvidsson; Norbert Sewald; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Organic chemistry; Conformational investigations; β-peptides; glycosylation; biomolecular recognition; cyclic β³-peptides; cyclic mixed α β²-peptides; β-peptoids; Organisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The beauty of the wide functionality of proteins and peptides in Nature is determined by their ability to adopt three-dimensional structures. This thesis describes artificial molecules developed to mimic secondary structures similar to those found crucial for biological activities. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Cyclic peptides as biological tools : Applications for diagnosis and therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19

    Författare :Camilla Eriksson; Ulf Göransson; Sunithi Gunasekera; Christian Becker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scaffold peptides; peptide grafting; rheumatoid arthritis; SARS-CoV-2; autoantibodies; peptide synthesis; pharmacognosy;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to design, synthesize and evaluate cyclic peptide scaffolds grafted with biological epitopes for their ability to bind antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 sera. One of the main outcomes of this thesis was the observation that scaffold peptides grafted with target epitopes efficiently neutralized anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPA) from rheumatoid arthritis patients. 3. 13. Antimicrobial peptides in the treatment of infectious and inflammatory conditions : Preclinical studies of mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety

    Författare :Camilla Björn; RISE; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antimicrobial peptides; AMPs; innate immunity; infection; inflammation; mechanism of action; efficacy; safety; antimicrobial resistance; antibiotic resistance; Antimicrobial peptides; AMPs; innate immunity; infection; inflammation; mechanism of action; efficacy; safety; antimicrobial resistance; antibiotic resistance;

    Sammanfattning : The rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbes worldwide and the urgent need of new antimicrobial agents have stimulated interest in antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as new therapeutics for treatment of infectious diseases. AMPs are present in all living species and constitute an important part of the innate immune system in multicellular organisms, including humans. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides

    Författare :Cristina Ciornei; Sektion II; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; vascular smooth muscle; sepsis; nitric oxide; human antimicrobial peptide LL-37; Antimicrobial peptides; lipopolysaccharide; bactericidal permeability-increasing protein;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). LÄS MER

  5. 15. Bacterial Resistance to Antimicrobial Peptides : Rates, Mechanisms and Fitness Effects

    Författare :Maria Pränting; Dan Andersson; Ian Chopra; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :antimicrobial peptides; antibiotic resistance; fitness cost; bacterial evolution; small colony variants; cyclotides; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The rapid emergence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has necessitated the development of alternative treatment strategies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important immune system components that kill microbes rapidly and have broad activity-spectra, making them promising leads for new pharmaceuticals. LÄS MER
